Project Week - Fast Fashion

Together with my colleagues from the humanities department we ran a project this week in class 6 on fast fashion.

We first explored what fast fashion is, how the fast fashion industry has developed since the Industrial revolution and how it currently functions within the global economy. We then talked about problems caused by the fast fashion industry (exploitation of workers, environmental damage, waste) and how consumerism makes these problems worse. Finally, students made posters about fast fashion, its problems, and possible solutions which they presented during the class assembly.

I was pleasantly surprised by the project results. The students were very interested and became aware of the dark world behind the massive fast fashion industry. They gave great presentations and designed amazing posters. I am sure that next time in H & M they will think twice before buying yet another t-shirt and that they will look differently at ads targeting them online.

It’s great to say how engaged students can become when subjects such as history and geography are combined and connected to important issues that are more relevant to their own lives.
