Coronation of Edward the Confessor (3rd of April, 1043)

On this day in 1043 Edward the Confessor was crowned king of England. His death in 1066 sparked the famous war of succession that William, Duke of Normandy, eventually won when he defeated Harold Godwinson in the Battle of Hastings.

This story is told in the famous Bayeux Tapestry. The picture shows a tiny fragment of the enormous tapestry which offered historians valuable information. One has to be careful however as you could consider it Norman propaganda. History is written, or woven, by the victors.
